I am hoping that some of you ship historians might help me, save me a lot of research.

All the built models of Royal Caroline I have seen and indeed the instructions themselves show that the windows on the cabin bulkhead and sides of the Caroline are made up of sash type windows. Whereas the windows on the rear are made up of much smaller panes. Watching movies such as Master and Commander and the original Horatio Hornblower movie (with Gregory Peck, great movie for Pandora modellers, the "Lydia" in the movie seems identical) all the windows are of the smaller pane type both. It seems inconsistant that sash windows would have been used in the originals. Is there use on the model to simplify the build? Or would these windows indeed have been of various types?

Any comments anyone?

Thanks

David

Hi David,

Sounds like you need to buy the book, Anatomy of a Ship: Royal Yacht Caroline.

Consider too, she was a luxury yacht so windows were for light and air, rather than just basic function.

Either way, the anatomy book has a vast amount of accurate detail and would be a good investment if you're building the RY Caroline

Just as an afterthought after trying Barnes and Nobles and every other bookstore I could find. All saying this book is out of print and unavailable.

Anyone got a copy they want to sell? I thought not! Perhaps some kind soul could fax me the relevant section on the windows of Royal Caroline?

Hopefully

David

If nobody can help you out for free, there's an Australian mail order model ship specialist that has it in stock still. No web sales though. If you're interested I can give you their postal, phone and fax details, and they will take card and ship same day.

Hi David,

It seems the Anatomy of a Ship series for the Royal Caroline may be hard to locate, but there are a few webites with pretty good photos that might help you:

http://www.tallshipmodels.com/caroline.htm

and

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/oleg.sukovoy/Royal%20Caroline.htm

Both sites look like they have excellent photos of the construction process.

Hope this helps!

Dee,

Please post (or email me at < snip >) the contact information for the Australian mail order ship model specialist. I have been looking for a source of the Anatomy of a Ship: Royal Yacht Caroline book for a long time.

Thanks,
Bill Burnett

The Australian timber tall ship modelling specialist that as of a couple of weeks ago, still had Anatomy etc of the RY Caroline (when they sent me their last catalogue) is:

Modeller's Shipyard
PO Box 406
Nowra NSW
Australia 2541

ISD Ph no: 062 4421 4242
ISD fax no: 062 4423 1692

They are a mail order only business. They do not have online catalogue or ordering.
They offer exceptional service and are nice honest people, so please treat them well.

Yours

Dee
