 Hi, all!
Could you please confirm the fact, that the term "H.M.S." first appeared in the end of the 18th Century, just before the 19th Century?
 If this is true, I meet a problem : there is a 1700 model called "HMS Neptune", she becomes "Neptune", and I upload a new album of pictures sent by Smaug of the "Neptune", a replica that could be seen in the movie "Pirates".

I'm not sure there's a problem here. The pirate ship was supposed to be a Spanish galleon..thus, no HMS. The only problem is the real vessel would have had the Spanish for Neptune, if there is such a thing.

"HMS came into use late 18th century -the earliest example is HMS Phoenix in 1789.

This is a contact I use on occasion hope this helps

One other point I find interesting is HMS is never preceeded with the word "THE"
His Majesty's Service Or Her Majesty's Service would be awkward to say the least with The Her Majesty Service or (example)The HMS Victory seems only Americans have this problem with the acronym

:D Thank you John,
1789 is the year I thought to be correct.
Now, any idea? There can not be two albums called "Neptune" in the gallery. Maybe I'd call the album sent by Smaug "Neptune replica"?

How about Neptune with sub albums.. Neptune and HMS Neptune? Or make one Neptune, the other HMS Neptune?

HMS? Stands for Her or His Majesty's Ship. Not service. This may be something of a new thing but that is the way it is.

Interesting that there are no other Brits weighing in on this discussion.

Unfortunately there is a great deal of confusion on this subject myself included below is a link describing a Captain Malcolm Cowan, R.N dated 1809 using the termonology His Majesty's Service also on a google search His Majesty Ship is widely used
http://www.bruzelius.info/Nautica/Rigging/NC22(1809)_p300.html

also note the second sentence in the next link "The Articles of War - 1749"
http://www.io.com/gibbonsb/articles.html

I do agree His Majesty's Ship makes more sense

ps Im half Brit does that count? : 8)

Hello Michel,

another idea could be to name this gallery 'Galleon Neptune' ?
because this ship is not a replica of a real historic ship.

Cheers
